One interesting piece of EV charging news this week is that BMW electric vehicles will be able to receive EV charging data from Eco-Movement, an EV charging data platform owned by Dow Jones Energy. While there are many EV charger apps and websites, the Eco-Movement information will be available within the electric vehicles providing granular real-time data, which will be accessible by summer of this year. Roderick van den Berg, Vice President at Eco-Movement, a Dow Jones company, answered some questions for CleanTechnica. Why did Dow Jones Energy decide to collaborate with BMW? The agreement is a milestone for Dow Jones’s energy business, which has seen significant growth following the acquisitions of OPIS, A2i Systems and Eco-Movement. How will owners of electric BMW vehicles receive and use the Dow Jones Energy EV charging data? The agreement brings the data from Eco-Movement directly into the BMW in-car experience, providing drivers with seamless access to high-quality information on nearly 2 million charging connectors across more than 80 countries. BMW drivers will benefit from real-time availability, pricing and location data, reducing “range anxiety” and streamlining the charging process. It will be available across BMW’s EV fleet by this summer. Do drivers of BMW EVs have access to nearly 2 million EV chargers across more than 80 countries? Eco-Movement works with over 3,000 Charge Point Operators (CPOs) in over 80 countries to process their charging location data and make the information available in near real-time, globally, across navigation platforms. Eco-Movement does not influence routing. We ensure the information pertaining to a charging location is precise with the availability updated in near real-time. This means the right coordinates, power type, plug type, operator name, status (occupied or not) and payment options are accurately displayed when navigation platforms use our data. This information can influence the routing of a vehicle to a particular charging location. How will BMW EV drivers benefit by using the data? Users can get to the nearest charging station with a near real-time understanding of whether the charger is available or not.
