Billy Joel's Moto Collection Is Going to AuctionMike MaezIt's no secret that Billy Joel is an avid car and motorcycle enthusiast, but the Piano Man is about to downsize his two-wheeled toy collection with help from Gooding's Christie. A collection of more than 70 motorcycles from Joel's garage will go to auction on Friday, November 20, and Saturday, November 21, at the Retromobile New York Auctions. All 70 bikes will be presented without reserve. The six-time Grammy Award winner had an eclectic taste in motorcycles—Ducati, BMW, Moto Guzzi, Harley-Davidson, Yamaha, Triumph, Honda, and Kawasaki are included—and the auction lot is full of preserved classics.Mike Maez"I've always been drawn to bikes built by people who cared about getting every detail right. I've loved building this collection. Now it's someone else's turn to hit the road," Joel said. The most fascinating motorcycle in the lot is perhaps a 1978 Triumph T140 Bonneville, which Madison Square Garden gifted to Joel for his 150th sold-out show at the world-famous venue. The Triumph includes a matching helmet listing every show and year Joel played at Madison Square Garden. Gooding's estimates the British bike is worth around $15,000.Mike MaezA piece of Isle of Man history is also for sale, in the 1982 Ducati 900 Mike Hailwood Replica. The Italian twin-cylinder motorcycle commemorates the motorcycle that Mike Hailwood rode to his legendary comeback victory at the 1978 Isle of Man. Painted in a stunning red and green livery, the replica bike is valued on the high end at $25,000.A restored 1975 Ducati 750 Sport is the cream of the auction crop. Produced between 1973 and 1978, the Ducati 750 Sport is often lauded as one of the most beautiful motorcycles ever produced. Plus, the L-twin-engined bike was rapid for the era, with 65 horsepower on tap. This lovely yellow example is expected to sell for $25,000 to $35,000.Mike Maez"We are truly honored to present the Billy Joel Motorcycle Collection, and with what better location than New York City itself, a place so strongly associated with Mr. Joel and his celebrated legacy as one of the most beloved musicians of all time. Billy Joel is one of the most recognized motorcycle enthusiasts in the world and we are thrilled to be presenting his prized collection at Retromobile NY in November," Gooding Christie's President David Gooding said.Proceeds from the auction will support The Joel Foundation, which works with nonprofit partners in music education, public and women's health, humanitarian causes, and the environment. A public preview of the auction lot will occur on Thursday, November 19, at the Javits Center in Manhattan. If You Can Only Own One Car, Make It One of TheseThese Are the Most Popular Cars by State
