A dealership quoted a man $8,600 for a repair, but something told him to seek a second opinion. That instinct led to a huge savings. The TikTok was reported by an aggregator account called Horror Channel (@faronankg9t), but the original video was posted by Dave’s Auto Shop (@davesautocenter). The Utah-based, family-owned business often posts videos about different repair jobs. The video starts with Dave on the phone with a customer. “I’m going to tell you why I’m losing my mind here, but you’ve got to give me a second,” he says. “You know what? There’s nothing wrong with your truck, man. Yeah, that’s why I’m losing my mind.” What Did The Second Opinion Say? That’s when Dave explains to the customer what he found under the hood. “The only thing that was wrong with it was the hose on the throttle body was blown off, and it wasn’t getting boost,” he says. The customer couldn’t believe it. “Are you freaking kidding me?” he asks. Tom replies, “No, I’m not. I make it a habit of not kidding people.” The customer says he’s actually a bit relieved that there isn’t something more serious wrong with the vehicle. “You should be relieved,” Dave says. “All you owe me is a diagnostic fee.” The customer reveals that the dealership initially quoted him $8,600 to replace both turbo chargers on his 2015 GMC diesel truck. View Comments Viewers React To The Mechanic Losing His Mind In the comments section of the video, viewers reacted to the dynamic that played out in the video. “He’s so dramatic for this,” joked one viewer. A second viewer (who clearly didn’t realize the video was a repost) said, “I wish more shops were like yours.” “As a 40-year mechanic and 25-year master tech. Honesty is the best policy," said a third person. "Keep up the amazing work.” According to AAA’s Club Alliance, getting a second opinion is often a huge money saver for car owners. That’s because even veteran mechanics like Dave can make mistakes at times. AAA also recommends being skeptical of extremely low estimates. That can sometimes mean the same diagnostic mistake happened—just in reverse. So it’s important to listen to the mechanic when they explain why a certain repair is necessary. If the rationale doesn’t sound convincing, it might be a good idea to get a second opinion. In some cases, the second mechanic might tell you the same thing. In others, you might save nearly $9,000.
