ZXMoto 5-CylinderSingles, twins, triples, and fours are cool and all, but what about fives? The engines of the motorcycling world haven't really changed all that much in the last 100 or so years. You've got singles, V-twins, parallel twins, triples, and a whole plethora of four-cylinder layouts, including V4s, inlines, and weird boxers, too. There's also the odd rotary, but we don't really talk about those, and they know why. And apart from those intrepid custom motorcycle fabricators—and those weirdos who use helicopter jet turbines—the only other cylinder layout that's semi-common is an eight count, whether flat or in the shape of a "V". That, however, could all be changing. Cause, how does a 5-cylinder sound?AdvertisementAdvertisementYes, MV Agusta has one coming, but if you're picturing the sweet, sweet sounds of an Audi 5-cylinder, you're not alone. That's all I'm picturing. But MV is going to have competition, as the Chinese brand ZXMoto, which is helmed by the former CEO of Kove, wants to bring a 1,000cc 5-cylinder sportbike to market. And not just that, he wants to have it go racing, go racing within the next two years, and configure it as a V5. Volkswagen, that you?Imagine that noise on the WSBK or Isle of Man TT grid. Yes, please.Weird and Wonderful WizardryHonda's Turbocharged V3 Teaser Video Will Have You Anxiously Awaiting Its RevealThat Famous Turbine-Powered Superbike Has a New Special Edition, It's Still NutsAccording to our friends at Visordown, "There isn't much in the way of hard information at this stage, and Xue hasn't revealed definitive power figures, dimensions or even a confirmed name for the motorcycle. Some reports from China have suggested a capacity of around 1,100cc and more than 210bhp, although those numbers should be treated as speculation for now."AdvertisementAdvertisementSo all we really have to go on about ZXMoto's engine is that it's in development and that the company is aiming for it to be 1,000cc. Other than that, we've got nothing. No production specs, no production date, no production motorcycle, nothing. Just that it'll be in the shape of a V, i.e., 3 cylinders, then 2 cylinders, and that the idea is to take it racing when it's complete in 2028. And that's it. Now, obviously, it wouldn't sound like a Volkswagen or Audi odd setup, as it'd be far higher-revving than those, and even the VR6 and legendary Audi 5-cylinder from the Group B era of rally had more traditional engine setups. The firing orders were weird as heck, but they were still traditional engines. This wouldn't be, and I honestly can't imagine what it will sound like when it's all done. Bananas? Likely bananas. And I, for one, am eager to hear said bananas, as weird engines always sound amazing, and this is definitely a weird one.
