Image Credit: By heartbeaz - originally posted to Flickr as Cars, CC BY 2.0/Wikimedia CommonsThe colors of a car are a subjective topic. Some of us like cars in one color, while the rest of us like them in different ones. Different colors are also popular in different countries, and a study from iSeeCars recently revealed the most popular car colors in America. The study had some interesting colors near the top, and it caused plenty of debate online. In particular, on the SubReddit r/cars, a lot of users discussed what the study found and whether or not they agreed with its findings.Of course, there was always going to be some debate. But a glance at the Reddit thread suggested that quite a few users were in disagreement as to whether the top colors really were that good. Again, it shows how subjective color can be, with different people liking different things.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe study itself did throw up a few surprises. Some brighter colors you might expect to be closer to the top seemed to reside towards the bottom of the list. Whereas near the top, some slightly more bland colors seemed to make up the majority of sales in the United States. What the Study Said About American Car ColorsAccording to iSeeCars, white was the most popular car color around 30 years ago. It has maintained that ranking today, and in 2025, it made up 25.7 percent of total sales in America, up from 22.1 percent in 1996. That perhaps isn't too much of a surprise, as white looks excellent on a lot of cars. What might come as a shock to some is what colors were below it. Ranked number two was black, with 23.4 percent of the market share in 2025. In third place was gray at 22.9 percent, and there was a huge drop off to fourth-placed blue, which had just 9.1 percent of the market share in 2025. Other brighter colors sat below that too, with red in sixth at 7.0 percent and green in seventh at just 2.2 percent. As iSeeCars stated, Grayscale colors are now accounting for over 80 percent of the market, 80.4 percent to be exact. Red and green have lost a huge amount of their market share, with them really pushed down the pecking order when they once used to be two of the most popular colors on the market. The study also showed that the Grayscale market share has been close to 80 percent for the last six years. What Did Reddit Users Think of the Study?Image Credit: iSeeCarsThere was some interesting debate thrown up by those on the SubReddit regarding the colors. User InfinitePossibility8 said the colors were "disgustingly bland." User Swoly_deadlift said, "Grey interior design in particular drives me up the walls. Seems way too popular with tech bros and the 'grindset' dudes, where you furnish the whole house with bland grey furniture, paint, and flooring. It looks awful." Most other users felt that the colors were indeed far too bland.AdvertisementAdvertisementiSeeCars had its own take on the great color debate. "Up until a few years ago, it looked like non-grayscale cars would completely vanish," said iSeeCars Executive Analyst Karl Brauer. "But the market share of grayscale cars finally stabilized in 2020, at around 80%, suggesting we'll see at least a sliver of creative car colors going forward," he added. So while it might look bland right now, more vibrant colors may become more popular as time goes on.If you want more stories like this, follow Guessing Headlights on Yahoo so you don't miss what's coming next.
