A monster of a truck, the MegaRaptor makes a regular pickup look puny.
Have you ever thought to yourself, “The Ford F-150 Raptor is way too inconspicuous, and the F-250 is far too small”? If so, you might want to give MegaRexx a call. Ford has never introduced a Raptor version of its Super Duty pickup truck, so this small shop in Wilmington, North Carolina, decided to take matters into its own hands. The MegaRaptor is based on a Ford F-250 Super Duty, which is then upgraded with bigger wheels, a massive suspension lift, a unique front end, and more. It's basically a road-legal monster truck. Is it silly? Absolutely. But is it fun to drive? We had to find out.
MegaRexx flew CarBuzz out to North Carolina to experience the MegaRaptor firsthand. We discovered that this gargantuan creation doesn't really drive like a Raptor model from Ford, but it offers a different, unique experience that can't be matched by anything from an OEM.
What Is A MegaRaptor?
The MegaRaptor package adds a host of equipment that transforms a run-of-the-mill Super Duty into an attention-hogging mega truck. MegaRexx designed a new front end that looks more like an F-150 Raptor, then went a step further by adding a High & Tight front bumper mounted with seven-inch LED Hella off-road lights. That one-piece front end tilts forward with gas shocks, allowing you to access the engine. MegaRexx also widened the truck at the back, adding fender flares that increase the width by a full nine inches on each side, putting it at the same width as an F-450 dually.
Inside, you basically sit in the sky since the MegaRaptor rides on 20-inch wheels from a military MRAP, and these are wrapped in 46-inch Michelin XZL tires. MegaRexx says it will install up to 56-inch tires if you are truly feeling bold. Thankfully, the company installs Powerstep XL running boards that drop down further than a stock F-250 to help you get in. Even at under six feet tall, we had no issues getting in or out of the MegaRaptor, though the bed step in the tailgate was a bit of a reach.
A Superhero Driving Experience
MegaRexx doesn't touch the engine, meaning Ford's 6.7-liter PowerStroke diesel engine still produces 475 horsepower and 1,050 pound-feet of torque (this truck was built from a 2022 Super Duty). You can even opt for the High Output tune with 500 hp and 1,200 lb-ft. We felt the standard PowerStroke had plenty of grunt, even with those massive tires. MegaRexx does swap out the gearing to 4.88:1 to help compensate for the added weight. If you don't plan to tow with your MegaRaptor, MegaRexx will build it with the 7.3-liter Godzilla gas V8.
Anyone who's ever lifted a truck knows there is a price to pay for tampering with the stock setup that was painstakingly developed by a multi-billion dollar corporation with a huge development budget. At parking lot speeds, you can feel and hear lug noise and vibration from the tires. It levels out as you pick up speed, though, lowering to a dull roar at highway speeds. As you'd expect, the MegaRexx requires more steering input to remain straight on the highway, and the turning radius is limited. Tight parking lots should be avoided, but MegaRexx managed to retain the front and rear parking sensors and the 360-degree camera, although the latter is warped a bit by the wider body.
A stock Super Duty is a rougher ride than an F-150, so we didn't expect the MegaRaptor to match the F-150 Raptor's cloud-like ride comfort. That's because the F-150 Raptor rides on Fox suspension tuned for high-speed Baja driving, while the MegaRexx rides on Carli full-progressive front coil springs and rear leaf springs with Carli-spec Fox Back Country 2.0 reservoir shocks. You can't comfortably fly over speed bumps in the MegaRaptor, despite what its imposing size might suggest – unless you want to experience a huge jolt. On the plus side, potholes are made completely irrelevant because the wheels are too large to sink into anything other than a lunar crater.
While the F-150 Raptor is now a dime a dozen, the MegaRaptor may as well be a hypercar on the road. Children and adults alike snap their necks to look at this truck; we noticed people taking pictures and video as they drove beside it, and one man even offered to buy it from us. The smile it put on people's faces is priceless.
As Luxurious As You Want It
As with the engine, MegaRexx leaves the Super Duty interior untouched. The MegaRaptor that we drove was based on an F-250 Lariat, as company owner Dr. Aaron Richardet says it offers the “best combination of features and saves our clients thousands when building their trucks.”
The Lariat comes well-equipped with heated/ventilated leather seats, SYNC 4 audio system with a 12-inch touchscreen, an eight-speaker B&O audio system to drown out the tire noise, a 360-degree camera, panoramic roof, and ceiling-mounted auxiliary switches that MegaRaptor wires up to the exterior lights. The MegaRaptor also gets an air horn that’s controlled using the first aux switch. Kids absolutely love it when you drive past and honk the horn. If money is no object, customers can step up to a King Ranch, Platinum, or Limited to get nicer leather, more features, and massage seats.
The SVN Brings Back The Excursion
The MegaRaptor is the F-250 Raptor that Ford refuses to build from the factory, and MegaRexx also offers another vehicle that is no longer built by the Blue Oval: the Excursion. The Ford Excursion was a heavy-duty, full-size SUV sold from 2000 to 2005. Unlike an Expedition or any full-size SUV sold today, the Excursion offered a gasoline V10 or V8 turbo-diesel that gave it immense towing capability. If you want to recreate that experience in 2023, MegaRexx will sell you a MegaRaptor with the SVN package.
The SVN, named for having seven seats, is basically an F-250 with a covered rear seating area. MegaRexx replaces the Super Duty's second-row bench with powered captain's chairs, then installs a three-seat bench behind it. It also installs a second heating/AC unit to help manage the temperature in the extra interior space.
Since the Super Duty is so long, customers can even opt for a four-row, nine-seat layout with two front seats, captain's chairs in the second and third rows, and a rear bench. Even with four rows, there is still plenty of room in the trunk. For buyers who are feeling whimsical, that rear top can be removable like an old-school Bronco or Blazer. Or if you love the idea of a modern Excursion but aren't into the whole MegaRaptor thing, MegaRexx will build a “normal-sized” SVN on 35-inch tires.
Pricing & Availability
If you're sold on the idea of a MegaRaptor, MegaRexx sells them with an F-250 Lariat included for $145,000. Or if you already have a Super Duty that you want converted, you can save a bit of cash by shipping it to North Carolina and writing a check for $55,000. Based on 2023 Super Duty pricing, you can get a Lariat Crew Cab from Ford starting at $63,740, while a fully-loaded Limited costs $96,095. Theoretically, you could get a MegaRexx for as little as $120,000, not including shipping. Once MegaRexx receives the truck, it only takes four to six weeks to turn it into a MegaRaptor.
This is a niche product that will only appeal to a very specific buyer: The type who thinks a regular truck makes too small of a statement, even in Raptor spec. Is it expensive? You bet. But when you consider that a Raptor R can stretch into the six-figure territory before dealer markups, the MegaRexx is not unreasonable for what you get. We've certainly never driven another pickup truck that attracts this level of attention. You'd be less conspicuous riding an actual velociraptor – and that's exactly the point.
