• Hurtan uses a modern Mazda MX-5 as the basis for this retro roadster
  • Its unique styling is meant to recall the British droptops of yore
  • Powertrain choices are reliable Mazda units, so you can’t go wrong—right?

If you’ve not heard of Hurtan Automóviles until casting your eyes onto these digital pages, you are to be forgiven. It is a relatively young car company, founded in the early 1990s by Juan Hurtado González, and based in Spain. They ply their trade with so-called “retro-styled” vehicles, ones which throw away the body of a production car in a bid to replace it with sheet metal which recalls machines of yore.

The coachbuilder’s latest is the new Grand Albaycín, knocked out for its 30th anniversary with updated colours and trims for the tri-decennial soirée. This particular adventure in custom styling uses a Mazda MX-5 roadster as its foundation, and first appeared back in early 2021.

Even retaining the safety gear and crashworthiness required of modern cars, the Grand Albaycín does a decent impression of an old-school British roadster. This is more than a bit ironic since the original MX-5 (née Miata) took much of its inspiration from those very same U.K. droptops. Except, of course, it was reliable.

Twin round headlights peer forward, book-ending a tall skinny grille that is appended by what appears to be a pair of circular driving lamps. The rear gets its own treatment, continuing the orb theme for its lights and placing the license plate up high and away from the quad-tip exhaust setup. With flared wheel arches and a distinctive character line (which could be mistaken at a distance for old-style running boards) running the length of its body, there is little chance of mistaking this thing for a bog-standard Mazda convertible.

A peek into the cabin confirms its roots, of course, since moving hard points like controls and ventilation tends to get prohibitively expensive very quickly. Still, the company has infused the space with old-school polished wood trim atop the door panels, applied quilted upholstery to the seats and door cards, embroidered the headrests with their 30th Anniversary logo, and added a few more flourishes. As with all things aesthetic, whether you think this looks good or not is up to your own interpretation of style.

Since this is an overseas machine, it’ll likely be available with either of the two engines on offer in the MX-5 for those markets: a 1.5L mill with 132 horsepower; or, more familiar to North Americans, a 2.0L unit good for 184 ponies.
