The BAIC brand is making waves locally, both with its B-series off-road offerings and now with its X-series premium SUVs under the Beijing nameplate. The most recent release from the Chinese firm, which has its own production setup steadily growing in Coega, Gqeberha, is the Beijing X55. This compact SUV is set to take the country by storm with its high specification level, attractive styling and even more appealing price point.
BAIC has leveraged its relationship with Mercedes-Benz to help create an offering that can keep company with some of the more established names locally.
The Beijing X55 is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine that produces 130 kW of power and 305 Nm torque, sending power to the front wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Creature comforts and a high interior trim level, paired with handsome exterior styling rounds off the package.
Trim levels
The Beijing X55 is available in three different trim levels, each one offering a little more than the first. The range starts off with the Dynamic variant that rolls on 18-inch wheels and is without a panoramic sunroof. This model still gets artificial leather upholstery but has to make do with manual seat adjustment and a manual tailgate. This version is also devoid of ambient interior lighting.
The next step up is the Elite. This model has exactly the same equipment and specification level as the Dynamic but adds a power tailgate, electric seat adjustment and a sliding panoramic sunroof with roof rails.
The range-topper is the Premium spec. In addition to the features found in the Elite, the Premium gets ambient lighting, memory function for the electrically adjustable seats, along with heating and ventilation for these seats. This model also has a panoramic sunroof with roof rails.
