Are we seeing two sides of the same coin, or does Consumer Reports have a point? One of the top five electric SUVs they recommended for 2022 is also among the least reliable EVs listed for 2023. Can a vehicle be among the top five recommended and still have a declining reliability rating? Let’s find out.
Which electric SUV is one of the least reliable EVs while also being recommended by Consumer Reports?
The Ford Mustang Mach-E is the electric SUV in question. For the 2022 model year, the Mustang Mach-E hit the market and took the world by storm. It quickly became one of the top five electric vehicles recommended by Consumer Reports.
Although the 2023 version of this electric Mustang SUV doesn’t sit at the bottom of the reliability rating list, it’s one of the vehicles facing declining reliability scores with Consumer Reports. However, it’s hard to pinpoint what happened from one year to the next.
Has the Ford Mustang Mach-E fallen?
The Ford Mustang Mach-E | The Ford Motor Company
The 2022 version of this Ford electric SUV earned a higher score with CR than it does for 2023. This moved the Mustang Mach-E from one of the top five recommended models down the hill to the eighth spot. While still in the top ten EVs, Ford might need to review what caused their first electric SUV to fall down the list.
Has the influx of new electric SUVs caused the Mustang to fall?
Cadillac Lyriq | Cadillac
It’s entirely possible that more competition in the market caused the 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E to reach a lower reliability rating than the 2022 version. The competition will only get tougher for this sporty crossover electric vehicle.
Kelley Blue Book tells us there’s a long list of new electric SUVs heading our way in 2023. These models include:
- Cadillac Lyriq
- Fisker Ocean
- Genesis GV60
- GMC Hummer EV SUV
- Hyundai Ioniq 6
- Jeep EV
- Lexus RZ
- Mercedes-Benz EQE
- Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV
- Nissan Ariya
- Subaru Solterra
- Toyota bZ4X
To date, most of these new electric SUVs haven’t been reviewed by Consumer Reports, and some are not yet part of the market.
What caused the Ford Mustang Mach-E to become one of the least reliable EVs?
The 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E | Ford
The lowered reliability rating from Consumer Reports has caused the Mach-E to no longer be among the recommended models. In one model year, the mighty have fallen. Ford Authority tells us the loss of this recommended status occurred over owner problems. These problems include:
- The display screen freezing up
- Charging and electrical issues and errors
- Battery cell failures
Considering the Ford Mustang Mach-E is an electric SUV, failing charging and electrical problems are extremely serious.
Ford’s response to this change in status is summed up in the quote from Ford stating:
“The survey results were from a population of vehicles early in the launch of these vehicles and those concerns have since been addressed.” – Ford
Ford issued recalls for these issues for certain 2021 and 2022 models, and they updated the software for these vehicles.
Will the Mustang Mach-E regain its recommended status?
The 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E | Ford
It only took one model year for the Ford Mustang Mach-E to go from a recommended model to one of the least reliable EVs. Can this electric SUV regain its coveted status with Consumer Reports? That’s certainly possible, but if additional issues come to light, that might not occur.
