Great Scott! We knew the next DeLorean would be an EV, but having four seats and an estimated range of over 482 km came as a bit of a surprise. Anyway, here’s the new DeLorean Alpha5. It also accelerates from 0-to 141 km/h in 4,35 seconds (that’s a reference to Back to the Future, FYI).

Italdesign spearheaded the overall construct of the car and has once again brought to life a deceptively gorgeous car. It’s a 4-seater, although there doesn’t appear to be much space in the second row, that has two large electronically controlled gull-wing doors instead of 4 individual doors. This design harks back to the proposed DMC-24, which unfortunately never saw the light of day. Its chassis was outsourced to the Italdesign firm. Its powertrain architecture was developed by a British-based company. According to CEO Joost de Vries, the company plans to expand its fleet with the potential introduction of SUVs, Coupes, and sedans in the future.
The Alpha5 will have a drag coefficient of 0.23, which inches ever closer to the same standing as names such as the Mercedes EQS and Tesla Model 3. Despite the firm’s maiden voyage of the new DeLorean nameplate within the realm of electric vehicles, de Vries confirmed in an interview with Autocar that DMC plans to cater to the internal combustion fanbase rather than become outright competitors within the electric sphere. We’ll see the physical copy of the Alpha5 later this year at the Pebble Beach in August.

The Alpha5 is powered by a 100+kWh battery that propels the Alpha 5 with considerable oomph. It distributes its power to all four wheels via two electric motors. It’s estimated that 0 to 100km/h is dealt with in the low 3-second range. The electric 4-seater will be limited to a top speed of 249 km/h. All of these specs were representations of the performance figures belonging to a “base model”. Whether we’ll see variants of the Alpha5 down the line is uncertain at this point, but de Vries mentioned that there will be a V8-powered coupe in the future, as well as a possible SUV coupled with a hydrogen-fueled powertrain.
The production these cars will be limited – there have been whispers of the only 88 units made, accompanied by unique NFTs, but no solid confirmation of that has arisen yet.
