Retro electric supercar will wind the clock forward to break cover three months early
The DeLorean EVolved is inching its way back to the future. The born-again electric sports car has been locked in for a May 31 global debut just a day after its creators released a fresh teaser showing off the vehicle’s full-width rear lighting signature and illuminated badge.
That’s a lot sooner than the previously advertised reveal date of August 18, but we expect the May event to be more of a preview than an all-out reveal.
The 14-second teaser clip was posted to the DeLorean Motor Company’s official Instagram page and provides a close-up but shadowy look at the EVolved’s slatted rear louvres, which are integrated into its sloping roofline and accompanied by a full-width tail-strip that ignites from left to right with sound effects not dissimilar to Darth Vader’s lightsabre igniting… albeit sped up.
With the background illuminated in a menacing red, the tail strip is then underlined by an illuminated and stylised ‘DELOREAN’ logo and, as the camera pans gradually pans out, we get out first proper look at the car’s sleek proportions.
Definitely more supercar than sports car, the EVolved has all the hallmarks of a high-performance driving machine with wide haunches, an inboard cabin, sloping roofline and hunkered down stance.
Previous teasers of the EVolved, which was designed in collaboration with ItalDesign, have already confirmed the inclusion of gullwing doors as per the original 1981 DMC DeLorean.
Details are still thin on the ground, but early speculation suggests the reborn DeLorean’s battery-electric powertrain – co-developed by ItalDesign and Williams Advanced Engineering – could dish out more than 1000kW/1000Nm.
