The Customs Department has seized a total of 41 luxury cars and nine high-powered motorcycles worth over RM 11 million. These vehicles were seized because they were brought into the country without valid import documents. The unpaid duties totalled a whopping RM 7.12 million.
Customs Department central zone assistant director-general Mohammad Sabri Saad told The Star that amongst the cars seized were a GT40, , a Mazda RX7, a Volkswagen Kombi, a MINI Cooper Clubman, a , and a .
The high-powered motorcycles include a Harley Davidson, Honda CB1100, and KTM Adventure 1290.
These vehicles were seized during the special operation named Ops Bearing that ran from 15- to 31-August-2022. Ops Bearing was started specifically to detect vehicles brought into the country without valid documents.
The vehicles were brought in from countries such as Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Mohammad Sabri also notes that some of these vehicles were brought in by students who might not have been aware that they needed an approved permit (AP) before bringing in the vehicle.
Importing vehicles into the country without proper documents is a violation of Section 135 (1)(a) of the Customs Act 1957.
