Cupra’s warm hatch gets two new entry-level powertrains; one available with a six-speed manual transmission
- New 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre engines
- Base-spec ‘V1’ model introduced
- Due on sale in October 2022
The Cupra Leon hatchback’s engine lineup has been expanded to include two new entry-level powertrains – one with the option for a six-speed manual gearbox. The Spanish brand has also introduced a new base ‘V1’ trim level to the range, bringing the Leon in-line with the mechanically-similar Cupra Formentor SUV. Pricing is yet to be announced, but the new cars aredue to go on sale in October 2022.
The new 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine will almost certainly be the least expensive option available to new Cupra Leon buyers. This powerplant produces 148bhp and while official figures are yet to be confirmed, should get the Leon from 0-62mph in around eight seconds. Buyers can choose from either an engaging six-speed manual or a slick DSG automatic gearbox.
Despite lacking any hybrid assistance, the entry-level engine should also be one of the most economical in the range; 1.5-litre Formentor cars can achieve up to 45mpg with the manual transmission.
Those looking for a bit more power can instead opt for the new 2.0-litre TSI engine with 187bhp; this should be able to cut the sprint from 0-62mph to just under seven seconds, with only a small hit to fuel economy. However, unlike the 1.5-litre powertrain, this is only available with the DSG automatic.
Of course, buyers can still choose from the existing range of Cupra Leon engines that include two higher-powered 2.0-litre TSI variants, as well as a pair of plug-in hybrids, which boast up to 242bhp and 37 miles of pure-electric range.
Alongside the two new engine choices, Cupra has also introduced a new base-spec trim level. Despite being the entry point into the Leon range, the ‘V1’ model still comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and taillights, a 12-inch infotainment touchscreen, keyless entry and start and twin exhaust pipes.
What does this mean for car buyers?
The Cupra Leon is a fantastic hot hatchback and the new additions to the engine range should expand the car’s appeal to those who love its sporty looks, but don’t quite need the extra power of higher-spec cars. As previously mentioned, pricing for the new models is yet to be announced; however, a new starting price of around £28,000 seems likely – putting the Leon in-line with equivalent versions of the Volkswagen Golf.
