Cupra, one of the newest brands to enter Australia in recent years, has this week released the specification of its upcoming EV offering called the Cupra Born.
It is set to be the first rear-wheel drive EV in Australia that will offer more than 500kms of range, in this case 511kms, courtesy of an 82kWh battery pack, one of the biggest packs on offer from EV hatches.
It’s also the first EV to arrive in Australia based on Volkswagen’s MEB platform. This is a dedicated EV platform developed by the Volkswagen group and is shared amongst brands it owns, one of which is Cupra.

“The Born is a BEV with a long 500km-plus range, exclusive rear-wheel drive hot hatch dynamics, plus the interior space and versatility of a larger vehicle,” Cupra Australia director Ben Wilks said in a statement.
“Its specifications are ideal for progressive Australian customers who will also be drawn to pricing similar to our other great hot hatch, the Leon VZx.”
Although the pricing of the new Born is yet to be released, Wilks’ comments suggest it will be similar to the 2023 Cupra Leon VZx which is priced at $65,490 driveaway. This will be confirmed by Cupra Australia in months to come.

According to Cupra, the Born EV hatch has already received the second largest amount of enquiries for the brand, just behind the Formentor plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) model.
The Born will include an e-Boost performance in all Australian-delivered EVs when they arrive in Australia around March/April 2023. The e-Boost will get the 170 kW rear-mounted motor from 0-100 km/h in 7 seconds.
19-inch wheels will be standard with an option to have 20-inch alloys wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres as part of the Performance package.
On the inside, there is a lot of technology that you would expect from an EV in 2022. This includes:
