The government is launching a public consultation on phasing out the sale of new fossil-fuelled motorbikes and moped by 2035, or even earlier for some vehicles.
The consultation proposes a 2030 end date for L1, L2, L3e-A1, L6 and L7 sub-category vehicles – and 2035 for all L-category vehicles at the latest.
The consultation will look at which L-category vehicles could be derogated; the methods to enforce requirements; and the role, if any, of alternative fuels in achieving this goal.
Alongside the consultation, the Department for Transport is announcing funding for a competition to help industry develop the zero emission motorcycle supply chain in the UK. This will help create a manufacturing base for small, emission free vehicles and could lead to thousands of new jobs across the UK.
Successful applicants for the £350,000 fund, will undertake research to support the production and distribution of new, green vehicles within the sector.
