The motorsport event has been a part of Colorado's fabric for over a century.
The Colorado DMV has released a special license plate to celebrate the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb held in The Centennial State every year.
Now, for a small fee, Colorado motorists can receive the new design, which depicts the iconic mountain range. Between the registration numbers is a map of the iconic hill climb event, along with a slogan that says “The Race To The Clouds.”
On either side of the plate, you'll find the profile of classic and contemporary race cars, both brandished with the numbers 19 and 16, respectively. That's a nod to the inaugural race that took place in 1916. From behind the mountain, you'll notice the C-shaped rising sun, with rays emanating across the upper part of the plate.
According to Colorado legislation, the special license plate requires two one-time fees of $25, aside from the standard fees one must pay when registering a vehicle. These fees will be funneled into the licensing services cash fund, with the other to be distributed to the highway users tax fund.
Just about every vehicle is eligible to receive the plate. This includes motorcycles and passenger cars, along with noncommercial vehicles, RVs, and motor homes. Trucks with an empty weight of less than 16,000 lbs can also wear the motorsport-inspired plates.
We don't see regular commuters forking out the extra cash for this, but motorsport lovers may jump at the opportunity. It would certainly look good on a Porsche 911 painted in white or blue, for example.
Should you want to stand out even more, an additional $60 lets you personalize your registration plate. That doesn't, however, include the $25 annual fee.
It's great to see the State of Colorado acknowledge an illustrious motoring event like this. It's been a staple of Colorado events for more than a century and attracts participants from all over the world. Last year's event was particularly gripping and featured everything from rip-snorting electric cars to standard production cars like the Acura Integra. The climb is even open to automakers as their own personal Nurburgring in America to set benchmark times up outside of the event itself.
The next Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is expected to kick off on June 25, 2023, and we're guessing more than a few of the spectator and competitor vehicles will be sporting the new license plate. Now, if only other states would emulate Colorado and introduce special plates for gearheads.
