Ultra-rare Holden Commodore SL/E prototype and GTS Monaro 327 Bathurst reach record prices
Two rare classic Holden cars shattered Australian auction records last weekend, with a one-of-one prototype 1979 Holden Commodore VH SL/E selling for $108,000 while a 1968 Holden HK GTS Monaro 327 Bathurst Coupe went for $330,000.
Both prices marked new highs for the respective models, with the VH SL/E prototype being the first and only one of its kind to ever come up for auction.
The prototype is the only survivor from an original batch of three VH SL/E prototypes and was believed to have never been driven, let alone even started.
The Holden GTS Monaro 327 Bathurst Coupe, meanwhile, was the pinnacle of the HK Monaro line-up with fewer than 1200 thought to have been produced.
Other examples like this available previously have eclipsed the $300,000 mark, but not to such an extent.
“This auction just proves that the value in classic cars is still going up and people are classifying them as an investment for the future,” said Lloyds Auctions chief operations officer Lee Hames.
“As we have seen in recent years, results consistently show that Australian classic vehicles that are in original condition, of limited build number, has a steel bumper, celebrity affiliation or significant provenance just continue to grow in value.”
