Production of the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, and Dodge Challenger is set to end at Stellantis’ facility in Brampton, Ontario, while vehicles built on its “STLA” Large Platform – meant to underpin electrified vehicles – will be added to its plant in Windsor, Ontario.
As previously announced, it’s part of a $3.6-billion investment for its “Dare Forward 2030” plan for electrification. Globally, Stellantis will invest CDN$45 billion into electrification and software.
The three “L-Series” cars currently built at Brampton will come to an end in 2024. The plant will be retooled for other products, which Stellantis previously said will include “all-new, flexible architecture” and “at least one all-new electric model.” Beyond that, the automaker won’t give any vehicle details or say when production will begin.
Earlier in June, Stellantis announced its battery joint venture with LG Energy Solution will be named NextStar Energy Inc., and will establish a battery plant in Windsor, with operations expected to begin in 2024.
The Windsor plant currently builds the Chrysler Pacifica and Pacifica Hybrid minivans, as well as the Chrysler Grand Caravan and Chrysler Voyager variants. It will be “transformed to support battery-electric vehicle capability for multiple models,” the company said, with retooling expected to begin in 2023. It will also have the flexibility to adjust its production volumes in relation to the market. Stellantis previously said the electrified architecture will be in addition to the “current product portfolio,” which sounds like there’s still at least some future for the minivans there.
The Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, and the Dodge Magnum station wagon were introduced as 2005 models. In 2008, the Magnum was replaced with the new Challenger. The Brampton plant was the sole production facility for all vehicles sold in North America. The company was DaimlerChrysler at the time, and some models were also briefly built in Europe and China for those local markets.
“There has been a lot of speculation, and while we’re not prepared to discuss any product details today, we’re happy to confirm that Windsor will produce vehicles on our new STLA Large platform,” said Mark Stewart, Stellantis North America COO. “These announcements represent key pieces of our Dare Forward strategy to provide safe, clean and affordable mobility solutions for our customers long into the future.”
