Told from the perspective of Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles.
Few rivalries at Le Mans are more memorable than that of Ford v Ferrari in the late 1960s. Porsche has won the most ever titles, Audi has been dominant until recently et cetera, but none of that comes close to the drama that comes from two egomaniacs going to war over cars, to the point where one (Ford) actually developed a whole multi-million dollar racing effort just to spite the other.
When you consider that, it’s kind of surprising that it’s taken this long for a movie to be made about it, especially when all sorts of other movies involving racing – Frankenheimer’s Grand Prix, for example, or more recently Howard’s Rush – have done so well.
Well, it appears 20th Century Fox has decided that the time has come, and the whole saga is set to be told in Ford v Ferrari, releasing in November.
Contrary to what you might believe, however, the story won’t be told from the perspective of Enzo or Henry; it will actually be told from the perspective of Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles, two drivers that were kind of in the eye of the storm created by the two owners.
Shelby and Miles will be played by Matt Damon (The Bourne Identity, The Departed, Ocean’s 11) and Christian Bale (The Dark Knight, American Psycho), respectively, and Entertainment Weekly recently sat down with them to get a little insight on the story.

In their report, it was revealed that director James Mangold (Logan, Walk the Line) wants to rely as little as possible on CGI, just as he did for many of the scenes in Logan. The idea, of course, is a more realistic effect. And, when you think about it, he kind of has to go this way as so many of the great racing movies of the past – like Grand Prix, and like Rush – featured actual cars on actual tracks, doing actual racing. You could throw Steve McQueen’s Le Mans on that pile as well, especially considering it takes place just a few short years after the events depicted in Ford v Ferrari.
In addition to Miles and Shelby, expect appearances by the likes of Bruce McLaren, Lee Iacocca, John Holman, Denny Hulme and of course, Enzo and Henry themselves.
I’m not sure about you, but for us, this – along with the recently-revealed The Art of Racing in the Rain could very well be the next biggest thing since Rush in the racing movie world, and we can’t wait.
