The latest vehicle to debut in the People’s Republic of China isn’t a direct knockoff of anything we are familiar with and originality has paid off since the GAC Space Concept looks fit for a king.

While other models in their lineup look like poorly executed knockoffs of German and other Asian automotive brands, this Space Concept isn’t. It looks so futuristic it even makes the brand new Hyundai Staria seem outdated but unlike its South Korean counterpart, this one will employ a form of propulsion that is at the frontier of the future. You may be thinking of electric power but the GAC Space Concept is actually driven by hydrogen.

That’s right, China’s Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC) have debuted this; the Space Concept, to run on a Hydrogen fuelled combustion engine. It is claimed to be capable of 135 kW and 350 N.m with a range stated to be as impressive as 605 km for the imposing land ship.

Imposing it is! The front end of the Space Concept boasts a grille that dwarfs anything that has been created yet, including the controversial BMW Kidney Grilles that are slowly festering in the German automakers portfolio. To make it stand out even further, the vertical slats are illuimated while an LED light bar sits above.

On the sides, the Space Concept employs two sizable gullwing doors that would conventionally enter into the second row of seats but since there are no B-pillars, compliments in artistic freedoms expressed in concept vehicles, it opens up into a vast interior expanse when the front doors are opened too.

The cabin, which is commodious and luxurious, doesn’t actually have that many seats which makes this seem more like a lounge-on-wheels than a stuffed people carrier. The front seats are less focused around the responsibility of driving since the Space Concept has been equipped with Level 4 autonomy, making it capable of self-driving. Once engaged, the steering wheel retracts and further increases interior space and minimalism.

While Toyota have dabbled in hydrogen power to little commercial avail, perhaps the industrial might of the People’s Republic might be the saviour of the ICE and lead the charge in making the alternative to fossil fuel powered ICE’s a reality with cars like this; the GAC Space Concept.
