Charge+ has unveiled its plan to establish a 5,000-km EV charging highway across five Southeast Asian countries, encompassing Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. The project aims to install 45 fast-charging hubs.

With a strong presence in the Southeast Asian market, operating in six countries and boasting approximately 1,000 charging points, Charge+ is well-positioned to undertake this initiative. The new charging highway will exclusively feature DC fast charging stations.

The average distance between the charging hubs along the highway is expected to be around 120 km. Each station will be strategically located either directly on the motorway or within a two km radius of interchanges, maximizing accessibility and convenience, the company informs.

Charge+ has also outlined the first few legs of the charging highway, beginning with connecting Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Penang. The second leg will span Penang to Phuket and Bangkok, while the third will link the Thai capital to Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh City. The final leg will connect Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi, completing the comprehensive charging infrastructure network.

In the project’s initial phase, Charge+ plans to invest in, own, and operate 18 charging stations, including urban charging hubs in the cities mentioned above. These stations are scheduled to be operational by the end of 2024. The remaining 27 locations will be completed by the end of 2025, consisting of a combination of stations owned by Charge+ and its strategic partners.

The announcement occurred during the ‘Future Mobility Asia summit in Bangkok. Charge+ also unveiled a strategic partnership with EGAT, a Thai state-owned enterprise responsible for energy generation and electricity sales in Thailand. This collaboration will enable Charge+ users to access EGAT charging stations through the Charge+ app.

Goh Chee Kiong, CEO of Charge+, expressed enthusiasm about transforming the perception of EVs in Southeast Asia. He emphasized that Charge+’s extensive operations in the region and strategic roaming partnerships will facilitate the growth and accessibility of the Charge+ network.

Ong Tze Boon, Chairman of Charge+, highlighted the company’s long-standing vision to promote electric mobility across Southeast Asia. The EV charging highway project, spanning five countries, marked a significant milestone in Charge+’s journey toward becoming a prominent player in the EV charging sector within the region, he said.

Charge+ was founded in Singapore in 2018 as part of the Sunseap Group, a clean energy business. The company secured a tender in November 2022 to install 4,000 charging points in Singapore, aligning with the city-state’s plan to have 60,000 charge points by 2030. Additionally, Singapore will stop registering new diesel vehicles from 2025. In 2020, Charge+ announced plans to install 10,000 charging stations across Singapore within the next decade, further reinforcing its commitment to sustainable electric mobility.
