cadillac celestiq: 300 miles of range for $300,000

Cadillac has revealed more information about the production version of its all-electric Celestiq (rhymes with “electric”) fastback sedan, including its performance and range estimates — but shoppers who can stomach its $300,000 price tag will customize the vehicle to their liking through a commissioned order, not at a dealership. The brand’s flagship electric vehicle utilizes the same Ultium platform shared with the Lyriq SUV and packs a long list of high-tech features and personalized premium appointments, but its estimated range falls below many more frugal rivals.

What Makes It Stand Out?

While the Celestiq bears a resemblance to the Lyriq with a similar profile, grille design, headlights and taillights, it also brings some unique elements that aim to justify the starting price. A four-zone panoramic glass roof uses a suspended particle device system that allows each occupant to control the transparency of their quadrant, and thousands of individual LEDs comprise the sedan’s exterior lighting animations. The vehicle’s headlights and taillights also have built-in indicators that show the charging status in 10% increments. Additionally, the Celestiq features power open and close doors with no visible door handles.

In addition to the four-zone glass roof, the EV offers standard four-zone climate controls. Five screens can be found inside: a 55-inch horizontal touchscreen that stretches across the width of the dashboard, a pair of 12.6-inch seatback units for rear passengers, and control screens in the front and rear that enable occupants to operate the doors and adjust their seating position, climate and the glass roof’s transparency. Interior lighting is comprised of more than 450 LEDs that can be customized for each lighting zone and 18 different animations. The vehicle’s sound system includes a 38-speaker AKG sound system plus three external speakers. Active road noise cancellation system helps insulate the cabin.

According to the brand, the Celestiq’s interior is differentiated with hand-finished metal details and hand-wrapped leather. Shoppers can choose from an array of colors and materials or create their own colors in partnership with Cadillac’s design team.

Performance, Range and Charging

The Celestiq gets a 111-kilowatt-hour battery pack and dual-motor all-wheel drive for a brand-estimated 600 horsepower and 640 pounds-feet of torque good for a 3.8-second 0-60 mph sprint. Cadillac says the Celestiq will offer a range of 300 miles on a full charge, and its 200-kilowatt DC fast-charging system can add 78 miles of range in 10 minutes at a public charger. Cadillac calls the Celestiq’s ride quality “isolated precision” and claims its comfortable yet athletic driving experience comes courtesy of an adaptive air suspension, active rear steering and advanced AWD system.

Among the Celestiq’s competitors, the 2022 Lucid Air offers a faster 0-60 sprint (less than 2.0 seconds based on automaker estimates) and features EPA-rated range of up to 520 miles. The 2022 Porsche Taycan Turbo S gets a 2.6-second 0-60 and range of 201 miles. Finally, the 2022 Tesla Model S Plaid gets a 0-60 time of 1.9 seconds and a 396-mile range.

The vehicle’s 55-inch center display combines two touchscreens under a single pane of glass: a driver display with driver and vehicle information, and a front passenger screen for media and connectivity. To eliminate driver distractions, the passenger’s side is dimmed with a digital blinder. In addition to a suite of advanced driver-assist features including remote parking, the Celestiq comes with Cadillac’s Ultra Cruise semi-autonomous driving system. The brand says functionality for the hands-free system will be implemented via over-the-air updates in 2024.

Pricing and Release Date

The Celestiq is expected to go into production in December 2023; to custom order the EV, shoppers will need to join the waitlist on Cadillac’s website. The brand says the vehicle’s starting price exceeds $300,000 and climbs based on options. Among its rivals, the Celestiq is the most expensive: The Air’s top Sapphire variant starts at $249,000 (not including destination charge); the Taycan Turbo S at $188,850 (including destination) and the Model S Plaid at $137,190 (including destination).
