BYD has teased a new off-roading electric SUV called the Leopard 5, which is to be launched next month. This time it’s under a new sub-brand called Fang Cheng Bao, according to a report from cnevpost.
The new off-road electric SUV is teased from various angles. One view shows the front of the car with its wide body, with mirrors that extend out.
Leopard 5’s bright headlights appear to be inspired by an ICE off-roader, the Landcruiser. The difference is seen in the twin frontal light bars that extend from one end of the vehicle to the other.
The side angle teased in the new video shows a tough stance, usually found in vehicles like the Land Rover Defender. This design theme continues to the rear where a spare wheel carrier is attached to the rear tailgate door.
From this angle, the moonroof can also be spotted along with side roof rails. On the rear, more four-wheel-drive design queues are used including the bold tail lights.
According to local media, the Leopard 5 is expected to have a dual-motor drivetrain with a starting price of 400,000 RMB which is equivalent to $A82,710. As a comparison, the Toyota Landcruiser starts locally at $89,181.
It’s expected to launch in August. At this stage, little more is known about the new off-roader, including if this new model will feature a 7-seater variant.

The off-roading segment has very few EV options. It’s refreshing to see new models under development by large EV brands like BYD.
Design queues from the Toyota Landcruiser and the Land Rover Defender resonate with many buyers in the market so an EV option will be well received by the market.
Although destined for the local Chinese market this year, these models are likely to be part of BYD’s global expansion plans.
