BYD has revealed its Song L concept at the Shanghai auto show, which will go into production later this year as a rival for the likes of the Tesla Model Y.
The SUV is part of the Chinese carmaker’s Dynasty series.
It will be underpinned by BYD’s e-platform 3.0. Detailed specifications have yet to be released but, according to reports in Chinese media, the vehicle will use lithium-iron phosphate batteries with CTB (cell-to-body) battery packs.
Car News China reports that pricing in China will be slightly more expensive than a Tesla Model Y at the time of release.
In China the Tesla Model Y starts from 261,900 yuan (AU$56,578), however once in production form the Song L will reportedly be 300,000 yuan (AU$64,844).
The Song L features frameless windows and an electric rear spoiler for a more coupe-like look.
It also features digital side mirrors, which will become legal in China on July 1.
Down back, BYD has also removed its traditional “Build Your Dreams” badging for simple BYD lettering.
There’s a steeply raked rear window and wide shoulders, while the tailgate is graced with a full-width light bar. There are also vertical faux air intakes.
BYD describes the Song L’s design language as “Vanguard Dragon Beauty”.
The dimensions of the concept were not released but according to Chinese media it will slot between the Song Plus EV, which measures 4705mm long, 1890mm wide, 1680mm tall, with a 2765mm wheelbase, and the Tang EV that is 4900mm long, 1950mm wide, and 1725mm tall with a 2820mm wheelbase.
BYD also used the Shanghai show to the Seagull from its Ocean series of vehicles, and the Destroyer 07 from its Warship series.
Its Dynasty series includes a range of crossovers and the Han mid-sized luxury sedan.
In November 2022 BYD celebrated the production of its three millionth electric vehicle. It sold close to 1.9 million vehicles in 2022, with its Song series of SUVs accounting for around a quarter of its sales.
Currently BYD only sell the Atto 3 locally, with the Dolphin and Seal to join the line-up later this year.
BYD is also preparing to launch a electric pick-up in Australia, which is expected in 2024.
