The latest Avenir is the Regal Sportback for 2019.
Adding a premium trim to the Buick lineup has been paying off for the brand, so it’s time to expand Avenir once again. This time it’s another five-door, but likely not the one you’re expecting. The latest Avenir is the Regal Sportback for 2019.
Buick’s own premium trim, along the lines of GMC’s Denali vehicles, has been a big hit so far. In the first few months it was offered, sales of the Avenir trim made up nearly a quarter of North American Enclave crossover sales. “Customers continue to signal that they want more from Buick, and Avenir sales are exceeding our expectations,” said Buick Canada Marketing Manager Mark Alger.
While sedan sales have been falling in recent years, in favour of buyers moving to crossover utility vehicles, Buick says that in the last four years the demand for premium midsized cars has spiked. Up 80 percent for midsize cars priced between $30,000 and $40,000.
That’s why the third production vehicle to get the Avenir treatment is the Regal.
The changes for the Regal Avenir start on the outside. The car gets a three-dimensional mesh grille treatment that is the signature of the brand. The design is inspired by one of Buick’s concept cars. Surprisingly, though, it comes from the 2016 Avista concept, not the Avenir of 2015 as you might expect.
Other exterior changes include 19-inch wheels in a pearl nickel finish that is one of the brand’s other hallmarks.
Inside, the changes are more significant. There is a new whisper beige interior theme that adds ebony accents and embroidered front-seat headrests. The seats get a special diamond-quilt stitching that, at least in photos, dramatically ups the interior appeal of the car. An ebony interior theme will also be available.
The Regal Avenir is also debuting a new infotainment system for Buick. The company calls it the brand’s first cloud-connected system. It has enhanced voice recognition and improved applications. More importantly, it allows drivers to set a profile that can be taken from vehicle to compatible vehicle. Log in and take your radio presets from car to car.
The Avenir also makes most of the Regal’s available active safety suite standard. It will have rear park assist, cross traffic alert, lane change alerts, and LED headlights. Advanced adaptive cruise control will be optional.
Behind that new grille will be the Regal’s 2.0L, 250 hp turbocharged four-cylinder matched with a nine-speed automatic.
The 2019 Buick Regal Sportback Avenir is set to arrive at dealers in early fall.
