Bugatti is adding a sunroof to the Chiron. A pair of them, to be more precise.
The Bugatti Chiron offers buyers, who can afford the $4 million (give or take) price tag that accompanies it, some serious hardware. Like that 8.0L quad-turbochared W16. The 1,480 hp engine can send the car to 300 km/h more quickly than most drivers accelerate to merge onto the highway. Or a top speed well north of 400 km/h. And exclusivity that is nearly unparalleled.
On the inside, the Chiron is every bit the luxury car. Lined with carbon fibre trim, leather seating in just about any colour, or combination of colours, of your choosing, and aluminum and steel bits surrounding the driver.
But despite all that, there is one thing that the Bugatti Chiron doesn’t offer. A feature available on just about every other fixed roof car on the market. It might not have a carbon fibre passenger cell or titanium bolts, but even the Kia Rio could give you something that Bugatti couldn’t. A look at the sky.
Look up in your $20,745 Kia Rio EX, and you can see the sun, the clouds, the moon, or the stars. Look up in your $4 million Chiron, and you can see… Well, we’re not sure what exactly, but probably some really nice suede. What you won’t see is that sky.
Until now.
Bugatti is adding a sunroof to the Chiron. A pair of them, to be more precise. Two fixed glass panels in the roof of the car, located over the driver and passenger seats.
Since this is a Chiron, the panels aren’t just some thin slice of tempered glass. No, the Chiron’s Sky View comes with thin glass and four intermediate layers.
Each layer has a purpose. There is a layer to reduce wind noise. The next reflects infrared radiation to keep the cabin cool. Then a tinted layer to stop the sun from blinding you. Finally an ultraviolet radiation protective layer. The laminated panels are also very stiff, maintaining the overall stiffness of the car.
The panels don’t open, but they do offer an extra bonus for tall occupants. The Chiron Sky View offers an extra 27 mm of space before head makes contact with headliner. Or in this case, glass.
The Sky View roof option will be formally revealed next month at Pebble Beach, but it’s available to buyers starting immediately.
Bugatti didn’t reveal the price of the fixed glass panel option, but we’d guess it will be priced significantly more than the entire MSRP of the aforementioned Rio.
