BMW has added a new Sport variant to the ageing X1 lineup that slots below the existing xLine base and athletic M Sport grades with attractive driveaway pricing
BMW has announced a new feature-packed Sport Collection variant of the X1 small SUV with attractive driveaway pricing following the success of similar Sport grades of 1, 2 and 3 Series models.
The X1 sDrive18i Sport starts from $55,900 driveaway, with a more powerful sDrive20i Sport also available priced from $67,900 driveaway.
BMW’s move to add a more affordable version of the seven year-old X1 should help bolster its appeal against fresh-faced rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz GLA 200 ($60,688 before on-road costs) and Audi Q3 35TFSI ($50,400 before on-road costs).
The BMW X1 sDrive 20i Sport will be priced at $67,900 driveaway
Visual tweaks to the sDrive18i Sport – which is limited to just 100 units – include the choice of either black sapphire or mineral white metallic paint and a high-gloss black interior.
The technology suite comprises a head-up display, 10.25-inch central touchscreen with navigation and wireless Apple CarPlay, an automatic tailgate, keyless entry, electric and heated front seats, lumbar support for the front seats and automatic climate control are also included in the Sport Collection variant.
The higher-spec X1 sDrive20i Sport will be priced from $67,900 driveaway and has the choice of four metallic colours including Black Sapphire, Mineral White, Mineral Grey and M Misano blue.
The X1 has a choice of three and four cylinder engines
An M Sport package, 19-inch M light alloy wheels, leather dakota upholstery with blue highlights and a panoramic glass sunroof complete the sDrive 20i Sport Collection.
Powertrains and performance of the BMW X1
Three powertains are available for the BMW range though only the base three-cylinder and more powerful four-cylinder are available with Sport Collection variants.
The BMW X1 is only available in front-wheel drive
The first is a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine dubbed an ‘18i’ that produces maximum outputs of 100kW/220Nm paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Finally, the gruntier top-spec ‘20i’ models feature a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 141kW/280Nm and is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
