BMW’s favourite crossover SUV may be removed from the automaker’s lineup in the coming years with the replacement rumoured to be an all-electric iX4. This means that the current G02 X4 may be living on borrowed time with fossil fuel power.

The iX4 that is expected to replace the X4 is expected by late 2026 and will be based on the Neue Klasse platform. Everything else remains rumor at this point but insider information claims that the current G02 X4 which has been in existence since 2018 will not be refreshed for another generation even with BMW already creating an internal codename for it.
Despite a strong demand for coupe crossovers, BMW may axe the fossil fuel-powered alternative altogether in a bid to focus on its electric-only counterpart. Its replacement iX4, known internally as NA7 will enter production at the automaker’s new Debrecen plant in Hungary from November 2026 and will employ the Gen6 round batteries which have improved range and charging abilities by as much as 30%.
In addition to their convenience during use, the updated batteries will be lighter and cheaper to produce by as much as half. On the green side of things, the next-gen battery packs will be less CO2 intensive to produce and will maintain up to 80% of their performance after a decade of use.

All of this information is still rumoured at this point but based on BMWs roadmap into electrification, this is a highly probable reality we are going to have to accept. Over the past several months, BMW has introduced the IX, I4 M50 and iX3 into our local market with the compact iX1 expected to hit our shores soon according to the local online BMW configurator.
