Famed Bavarian automaker BMW has officially announced that it will merge with the Buchloe-based tuning company Alpina. The contract between BMW and tuner Alpina has now been extended till the 25th of December 2025.
After the specified date the factory located in Buchloe will be closed. Workers currently employed at the factory will be assisted by BMW to find placements in their ranks or with suppliers and development partners. Both parties involved have refrained from disclosing the figure involved in the transaction.

The deal has not yet been fully approved as a result of Antitrust authorities having to clear the deal. According to the co-managing director of Alpina, Andreas Bovensiepen, the merger and sale of tuner Alpina to BMW was a strategic decision to ensure the longevity and continued success of the company in the face of electromobility which has put huge strain on small businesses such as Alpina. BMW benefits from having its cars specially modified by the Alpina team. Currently, BMW Alpina cars are partially built in the Buchloe Alpina factory and then sent for completion in the BMW factory. There has also been mention of an initiative by Alpina to restore older Alpina cars, along with a push for greater availability of parts for the cars.
“We recognised the challenges facing the automotive industry early on and are now setting the right course for Alpina and for our family firm,” said Bovensiepen.
“This will mark the beginning of a new chapter. Both the Alpina brand and our company are extremely desirable. We made a conscious decision not to sell Alpina to just any manufacturer, because BMW and Alpina have worked together and trusted one another for decades,” he concluded.
For over 50 years, Alpina has been handcrafting exceptional performance vehicles.
Alpina has cemented itself as a staple of German engineering. Moreover, the company has become synonymous with the BMW brand and following its initial inception in 1962, has created some of the most sought-after vehicles in the world. The company largely focuses on the production of special models. Alpina is known for its hand-built parts and engines alongside custom upholstery and interior customisation work.
Jens Thiemer, Senior Vice President of Customer and Brand BMW said “BMW and Alpina are a perfect fit! The Alpina brand has matured alongside BMW over the past 50 years and has everything it takes to make the heart of an automotive connoisseur beat faster all over the world. It finds the right balance between cultivated sportiness, luxury, and exclusivity.”
