“How big will the grilles be?” A question asked by many who share the teaser off BMW M’s LMDh car on Facebook. A teaser image emerging from the BMW M Facebook page alluded to their upcoming BMW LMDh car that will be fully unveiled on the 6th of June.
While we’d far prefer to cover some of the technical aspects of the BMW LMDh prototype, we know nothing at this stage, so naturally, let’s take a moment to acknowledge those ENORMOUS kidney grilles/grille (is it one or two? We don’t really know anymore…). We don’t know anything about what will make this car tick. All of that will be detailed (hopefully) on the 6th of June.
As per the regulations, BMM M’s prototype race car will need to be powered by a hybrid powertrain. BMW will most likely employ one of their internal combustion engines on conjunction with some trick hybrid tech.. They have confirmed that the chassis of the car is being built by Italian car specialist, Dallara. The Italian firm has an extensive track record within the world of motorsports, from technical directors birthing the legendary Miura in 1966 to producing their very own sports car, the Dallara EXP in 2021 – it’s safe to say that BMW M’s prototype is in good hands.

Two prototypes will be entered for the 2023 season with the BMW Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing team at the helm. The motorsport division has announced that it will participate in the 24 hours of Daytona, 12 Hours of Sebring, and the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta. It’s the return of a big name to the international prototype racing scene and might prove a little difficult since some of its competition, such as Porsche, are well into the testing of the LMDh vehicles. Manufacturers such as Lamborghini have also announced their development of an LMDh prototype, so competition is likely to be übertough for the kidney-grilled automaker this season…
