BMW has confirmed details of competition-inspired 'M Performance Parts' for the new M2

Hot on the heels of the release of its second-generation M2, scheduled to arrive in Australian dealerships in the first half of 2023, BMW has confirmed details of competition-inspired ‘M Performance Parts’ for the new model.

Designed to enhance the compact two door’s aerodynamics, powertrain, chassis and interior, BMW says all components in the available range have been homologated as part of the M2’s overall development program.

High-gloss exposed carbon-fibre body elements include a front splitter, air intake trim, side skirts, spats at the edge of each wheel arch and exterior mirror housings.

There’s also a carbon rear lip spoiler and rear diffuser, as well as a (non-carbon) roof edge spoiler in high-gloss black, M Performance door pins with a coloured M logo and a carbon M Performance fuel filler cap.

For that extra bit of track day flair an aramid (aromatic polyamide) tow strap is available, with the same exotic composite fibre material (originally developed for the US military) also applied to the roof-mounted antenna cover.

A stainless steel and titanium exhaust system dials up an even racier note and reduces kerb weight by eight kilos. Tailpipe trims in titanium/carbon fibre close off perforated inner pipes to enhance the competition car vibe.

High-gloss exposed carbon-fibre body elements include a front splitter and air intake trim.

An M Performance coilover suspension with height-adjustable spring cups front and rear allow ride height to be lowered by up to 10mm.

Forged alloy rims – 20-inch front, 21-inch rear – are offered in ‘M Frozen Gold Bronze’ or ‘M Jett Black matt’ (standard fit rims for the new M2 are 19-inch M light alloys at the front and 20-inch at the rear) and M Performance branded tyre bags are available to keep additional wheel sets clean and organised in competition pit garage style.

Inside, M Performance interior trim panels, in a combination of open pore matt-coated carbon-fibre and Alcantatra, dial up the track-attack feel.

BMW says all components in the available range have been homologated as part of the M2’s overall development program.

Available as an individual option, Alcantara M Performance knee pads provide front seat passengers with additional support in hard cornering.

M Sport seats are standard spec for Australian M2s, and part of the M Performance range is upgraded backrest covers in carbon and Alcantara, as well as head restraint trims in a choice of open-pore or high-gloss carbon-fibre.

The M Performance ‘Pro’ steering wheel features carbon elements as well as a heavily contoured grip area in Alcantara with large thumb rests. The rim’s upper section and slightly flattened lower section are trimmed in full leather, with a top centre marker and contrast stitching also featured.

Final interior element is velour M Performance floor mats, featuring contrast stitching and M Performance badging.

BMW Australia has confirmed pricing for the new M3 at $119,900, before on-road costs, which is $17K more than the previous M2 Competition.

It’s powered by the M3 and M4’s twin-turbo 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder petrol engine, sending 338kW (36kW more than the outgoing M2 Competition) and 550Nm to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox or eight-speed automatic transmission.

There’s also a carbon rear lip spoiler and rear diffuser, as well as a (non-carbon) roof edge spoiler in high-gloss black.

An ‘M Carbon Experience’ package has already been announced, from $14,500, adding carbon bucket seats as seen in the M3/M4, a higher top speed and a voucher for a BMW Driving Experience course.

Pricing and availability for the M Performance Parts range is expected to be confirmed closer to the M2’s local launch.
