BMW has unveiled the latest members of its growing electric vehicle family – the BMW iX and the BMW i4. The market launch for both new models is November, 2021.
BMW says the move marks ‘the next step in the Group’s transformation towards a 50% global share of fully-electric vehicle sales in 2030’.
The BMW iX will be launched with a choice of two model variants. Both are equipped with an electric all-wheel-drive system. The BMW iX xDrive50 posts acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.6 seconds, while the BMW iX xDrive40 hits the same mark from rest in 6.1 seconds.
The first-ever BMW i4 will also come in two model variants. Combined Charging Unit allows use of DC fast-charging stations with output of up to 200 kW. Range can be increased by as much as 164 kilometres / 102 miles (BMW i4 eDrive40) and 140 kilometres / 87 miles (BMW i4 M50) within 10 minutes at stations of this kind.
BMW Charging with special rates for public charging stations and IONITY high-power charging stations.
Vehicle production will be at BMW Group Plant Munich; battery cells will be manufactured using 100-per cent green energy.
Around 40 driver assistance functions available. Front-collision warning, Speed Limit Info and Lane Departure Warning fitted as standard. Optional Active Cruise Control with automatic Speed Limit Assist, route monitoring function and (in Germany) reaction to traffic lights. Also available: Driving Assistant Professional including Steering and Lane Control Assistant.
About the BMW i4, it says: ‘The BMW i4 is the brand’s first electric vehicle focused squarely on driving dynamics. Locally emission-free driving pleasure, compromise-free premium quality and customer-oriented individualisation come to the traditional core of the midsize segment for the first time’.
About the BMW iX, it says: ‘Conceived from the outset for purely electric mobility, this model is based on a new toolkit for the future, whose vast potential for innovations in the areas of automated driving, operation, connectivity and digital services translates into a premium mobility experience unparalleled in this segment’.
The BMW iX will be produced at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing in China. Both the vehicle itself and the battery cells will be manufactured using green power across the board.
