BMW has returned to the shooting brake arena with the Concept Touring Coupe, the latest in a long lineage of stylish wagons from the Bavarian brand.
The one-off special is based on the Z4 convertible and was wheeled out at this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este over the weekend.
Obviously, the biggest change from the donor car is the fixed-roof design and wagon-like rear end, which are designed to highlight the Z4’s already aggressive lines.
“The shape accentuates the car’s athletic shoulders, while the flat rear window and clearly defined body surfaces emphasise the vehicle’s solid stance,” BMW said in the release.
This creates a more practical version of the Z4 (which has a boot capacity of just 281 litres), but BMW is yet to divulge the exact capacity for the Concept Touring Coupe, instead saying it “provides ample room to stow luggage for spontaneous trips”.
BMW has also commissioned a matching set of bags for the Concept Touring Coupe from Schedoni.
The new roof and boot combine with the long bonnet and two-box design for what is known as a ‘shooting brake’ bodystyle that was last seen on the BMW Zagato Coupe concept from over a decade ago, while the most famous is likely the Z3 Coupe that became known as the ‘clown shoe’.
The exterior colour is also a unique grey colour that features flakes of blue glass, which BMW calls Sparking Lario, which contrast with the silver-bronze highlights on front grille and window surrounds.
Finishing off the look is a set of bespoke staggered wheels, measuring 20 inches up front and 21 inches at the rear, with a 20-spoke design coloured in gold.
However, the interior has also been tweaked with Italian leather, and sports a two-tone grey and brown design with prominent stitching and perforations for extra opulence.

Design aside, the Concept Touring Coupe makes use of an inline six-cylinder petrol engine, though BMW does not mention exactly which one.
The Z4 already features such an engine though, a 3.0-litre turbocharged unit to be exact, which outputs 285kW/500Nm to the rear wheels in production form.
Sending drive through an eight-speed automatic transmission means the Z4 M40i can accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 4.1 seconds, but its unknown how the changes made to the Concept Touring Coupe would affect performance.
