The VW Polo Vivo came out on top in the hatchback segment in August, selling a total of 2,452 units and racking up a comfortable lead of over 1,000 units above second place.
The runner-up in question is none other than the Toyota Starlet which accomplished a performance of 1,372 sales, narrowly edging out the Suzuki Swift which took the last spot on the podium with 1,349 models moved.
The more premium VW Polo also achieved an impressive tally of 1,153 examples sold in August, being the last hatch to cross the 1,000-unit mark.
The Hyundai Grand i10 then drove away with fifth place courtesy of 830 buyers opting to take home the hatch, followed by the Renault Kwid in sixth scoring 684 customers.
The Suzuki S-Presso, Toyota Vitz, and Suzuki Baleno occupied the seventh to ninth positions with their 481, 467, and 407 sales, respectively, while the Kia Picanto closed out the top 10 with 266.
Judging from these 10 best-selling hatchbacks, it’s clear that affordability and brand preference are big drivers behind purchasing decisions in the hatchback segment.
The top performers were all priced under R300,000 with the exception of the VW Polo, and only six manufacturers were present with three Suzukis, two Toyotas, and two VWs featured on the list.

Ranked below are the best-selling hatchbacks in South Africa from August, according to Naamsa’s new vehicle sales statistics.
It must be noted that BMW and Mercedes-Benz do not report model-specific sales and were therefore not included. For reference, the two premium brands sold 930 and 560 vehicles across their entire model ranges last month, respectively.
