Barcelona has banned e-scooters after a kick scooter burst into flame when charging on a train. Authorities say the ban will be in place for six months to give them time to work on regulations that will guarantee the safety of passengers.
The move has been controversial to begin with, as commuters who do rely on a secondary source of mobility will now have a longer way to work. The Association of Mobility, Sustainable Environment and Smart Companies criticized that it should merely be the charging of electric scooters that should be banned on transit, instead of the entire vehicle.
“Our objective is to move towards compatibility, but since the first thing is to guarantee safety, we have no other solution than to face coordinated work to see how we can ensure that incidents can be avoided,” said Laia Bonet, president of Transport Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB).
