If there's one thing Porsche owners love, it's getting together and admiring one another's cars, and this is nowhere more apparent than at the Das Treffen Porsche event held yearly in Bangkok, Thailand. The show, which very well may be in the running for the most colorful car show in the world, was created in 2016 by Porsche owner and lover Sihabutr “Tenn” Xoomsai and has now reached its seventh year.
It perfectly encapsulates the roots of a city and country that is a conglomeration of different time periods. Air-cooled 911s sit side by side with their liquid-cooled descendants in a sort of colorful German rainbow. Das Treffen is German for “The Meeting,” and we think that's the perfect name for an event showcasing what may be the most colorful car of all time.
For Das Treffen 7, the show adopted the Dreams in Colors theme, which is an homage to the multitude of different Porsche colors as it is recognizing the owners that are as unique and varied as their cars. The man behind the show, Tenn, created the show out of a growing love for the Porsche brand, something that was fostered from a young age.
“I always had a thing for Porsche since I was a kid,” he remembers. “The first Porsche I drove belonged to my father's friend. He came over to our house one day in a brand new 964, tossed me the keys and asked me to get them something to drink. I never forgot that day – the sound, the smell and the kick in the back.”
The vehicles are a source of pride and aspiration, as they're a part of the owners as much as they're a part of Porsche, and this event aims to celebrate that.
The atmosphere can best be described as carnival-like, with the meet being hosted at IMPACT Speed Park in Bangkok. It's home to many different events, from a Gymkhana Zone for owners competing in time trials, to kids driving school where even the younger crowd gets a chance to work on their skills.
“The most important thing I learned that day,” Trenn recalls of that first moment in a 911, “is that the best way to enjoy a Porsche is to share it. Since then, that is what I tried to do – to share my passion with my friends and fellow enthusiasts.”
The show is also celebrating the 30th anniversary of Porsche in Thailand, the 60th anniversary of the iconic 911, and 75 years of Porsche sports cars. To commemorate these milestones, Porsche brought a 911 Speedster in a Paint-to-Sample Oak Green Metallic and a classic 911 F-Series in Burgundy Red.
The show is a hit and looks to grow even more in the years to come. It's very reminiscent of a similar show thousands of miles away in the Middle East: Icons of Porsche. That show, which also took on “dream” as a theme this past year, is another celebration of Porsche and Porsche owners in a place where only a little over 20 years ago it didn't exist in. Icons did one up Treffen with a literal Camel 911 though, so it looks like Treffen may have to step up its game next year.
