Customer deliveries of the new BAIC Beijing X55 have started in South Africa with its local pricing and specifications finally revealed.
Available in three trim levels, the new X55 is now on sale at a starting price of R394,900.
Beijing is BAIC’s new brand and at the local launch of the crossover, the company hinted that we can expect to see the name much more often, including on new-energy vehicles, in the future.
Spec rundown
The different variants of the new X55 are set apart by equipment alone as each is styled almost identically and gets the same powertrain.
Starting on the entry-level Dynamic, standard spec includes a 10.1-inch CarbitLink infotainment system accompanied by a 10.25-inch digital driver’s screen, Bluetooth support, keyless start, a reverse camera, artificial leather upholstery, and four driving modes consisting of Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Smart.
Regarding safety features, which are also standardised across the X55 line-up, it boasts six airbags, ABS with brake assist, brake auto hold, a rear camera, parking sensors, and hill descent control.
In the middle of the range sits the Elite derivative, set apart from the base model by the addition of a panoramic sunroof, electric seats, an electric tailgate, keyless entry, and 19-inch alloys.
In the range-topping X55 Premium, buyers can further expect 8 speakers, multi-colour ambient lighting, a front camera, heated and ventilated seats, and driver seat memory functions.
Performance
Across the range, Beijing’s new X55 is driven by a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol motor capable of 130kW and 305Nm.
Driving the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, the crossover manages an average fuel consumption of 7.2l/100km.
From a standstill to 100km/h takes 7.8 seconds.
