The Austrian Post has put its 3,000th electric vehicle in service. This also marks the kick off for the “Green Vienna” initiative, as the postal service plans to deliver all letters and packages with zero emission in the Austrian capital by 2025. By 2030, it wants to make deliveries across the country zero emission.
The first 40 electric vans are already in service in Vienna. By fall, deliveries in at least one district will be entirely emission free. By 2025, this will be true for all districts in the city. Until then, Austrian Post will replace 350 conventional vehicles with electric ones and invest around 20 million euros in the renewal of its fleet.
Austria wide, the fleet is made up of about 1,200 e-bikes, cargo bikes, electric mopeds and trikes, as well as 1,800 electric vans. According to Austrian Post, it therefore operates the largest electric fleet in the country.
Swiss Post also announced that it is extending its electric fleet, already delivering letters and packages in the cities Zurich and Bern with zero emission. By the end of next year, Geneva and Basel as well as some 50 other locations will follow.
