Audi Sport celebrates its 40th birthday this year, with celebrations kicking off at Germany’s iconic race track, the Nurburgring.
Audi Sport started out life as quattro GmbH in 1983. It was a performance skunkworks made up of a small team that were riding the momentum of the all-conquering Group B Rally star, but focussed primarily on accessories for Audi’s more mundane road cars.
Since then, Audi Sport has developed into a registered vehicle manufacturer with the S6 plus, and of course, the Audi R8, and a successful customer racing producer with 400 titles under its belt.
Of those victories, Audi Sport has snatched six overall victories and three additional GT3 titles at the Nurburgring, which is why it’s headed back to the ‘Ring for a special birthday celebration.
Last year, a quarter of Audi Sport’s vehicles delivered came in the form of an e-tron GT, showing that customers like what they see from the company’s performance electric division.
Audi says that by the end of the decade, the entirety of its lineup will be made up of plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and battery-electric (BEV) vehicles that will have no problem setting your hair on fire when pushed. Managing director, Sebastian Grams, said:
“We have a clear goal: to successfully carry the sporting DNA of the four rings into the electric future. The company has remained true to itself over all these years, has always been courageous and dared to do new things… we want to shape the future of mobility in the high-performance segment in a sustainable and progressive away.”
