The world may be in the midst of a second coronavirus wave, but that hasn’t stopped Audi from plugging away at developing its upcoming Q4 e-Tron, it’s new entry-level electric SUV. Debuting in concept guise in early 2019 and having been spotted testing cloaked in camouflage in recent months, there’s a chance we may see the production model for the first time at the Beijing Motor Show on 26th September.
The Q4 e-Tron will sit below the current e-Tron, which confusingly isn’t a Q model yet is an SUV, and will be sandwiched by the existing Q3 and Q5. In fact, if you were to strip back the Q4 e-Tron’s bodywork you’d find the same underpinnings as the newly-announced Volkswagen ID.4.
So although we don’t have any official details yet about the battery and range of the production-spec Q4 e-Tron, the recent unveiling of the ID.4 means we can have a good guess. At launch, the ID.4 has a range of 323 miles courtesy of a 77kWh battery pack, so we’d expect a similar range from the Q4 e-Tron.
VW also plans to release a performance model, the GTX, with over 300bhp, and this may serve the bases of a warmed-up SQ4 e-Tron. While we know Audi Sport is interested in making performance EVs, we think the RSQ 4 e-Tron would come with closer to 400bhp.
We’re also expecting the Q4 e-Tron to offered in two forms: a more conventional SUV and a Sportback model with a more coupe-like roofline. Because nothing beats buying an SUV for practicality, then taking away a chunk of the boot space. And headroom.
As for pricing, we wouldn’t be surprised if the Q4 e-Tron comes in at the £50,000 mark, making it around £10,000 cheaper the current, bigger e-Tron.
