Grant Takara, a mechanical engineer who has worked with Computerised Numerical Control (CNC) machinery for a decade launched a Kickstarter campaign for a scaled down aluminium CNC-machined V8 pen holder. The finished product is loosely based on Chevrolet’s LS3 engine block but uses a 5-axis CNC machine to profile the facets.

Each cylinder represents a cavity that can hold a pen or pencil with three varying Acetal liners for the cylinders able to accommodate multiple diameters of pens and pencils. The overall dimensions of the compact V8 pen holder of 93 mm in length by 80 mm in width and a height of 59 mm mean that it is scaled down sufficiently to fit on most workspaces and desks.
The final product which is machined from a billet of aluminium is available in two finishes. Either a machine finish or a bead blasted finish, like that of the texture found on a V8 engine block commonly found on American muscle cars.
Takara commenced the campaign in January of 2022 needing $5,000 worth of pledges to get the project started but has since received 204 backers pledging $31,497 to help bring this project to life. Information was last updated on the 28th of March 2022.
Pledges range between $129 and $149 and backers of the project are set to receive their V8 Pen Holder as early as May. The product which is produced within the USA will have free local shipping although international delivery is possible with transit and tax fees handled by the buyer.
