The next generation BMW X1 has been in the pipeline for a while now, and photographers have been spotting BMW’s next baby SUV since 2021.
Prototypes have been spotted on public roads, in car parks and on ice during cold weather testing, and now it has been spotted at the one and only Nürburgring. The lack of snazzy exhaust tips suggests that this is just a common-or-garden X1 and not an M Performance version and the lack of visible ports on the bodywork tells us that this isn’t the electric iX1 either. Could this perhaps just be an ordinary ICE X1? Perhaps.

As with previous spy shots that have been captured, it would appear as though this vehicle is wearing production read head- and taillights. While not much can be ascertained in terms of the vehicle’s handling by looking at spy shots, the fact that it’s based on BMW’s UKL architecture as shared with MINI models, suggests that it’ll be an engaging and lively thing to pilot. Finetuning to the vehicle’s handling that comes as a result of testing at the famed circuit will most certainly contribute to an engaging vehicle, too.
While the grille is most certainly more prominent than it was on the E84 and F48 models which precede it, it would seem as though BMW have taken a more conservative approach to the newcomer, avoiding replicating the divisive face of the upcoming XM. It’s also likely that the all-new X1 will be slightly larger than the vehicle which it replaces.

While there is no word yet on powertrain options for the all-new X1 just yet, an array of mild hybrid petrol and diesel engines would make sense. It’s very likely that a plug-in hybrid is in the works, too, given BMW’s big focus on electrification. With the above in mind, it’s also worth noting that both the M Performance 35i and all-electric iX1 models are all but confirmed.
