The competition for this particular Mac has changed; instead of the likes of the Audi R8 or Ferrari 488, it’s the likes of the Aston Martin DB11 and Ferrari Portofino that this McLaren has in its sights
In an effort to touch as many sports car buyers as possible – and a day after the 20,000th car rolled off the line in Woking — McLaren revealed yet another sports car to help round out what is an ever-growing portfolio. It’s called the GT, and it slots in just below the 720S in the line-up.
Essentially, the goal of the GT is to offer McLaren mid-engined performance but with a nod to longer trips; more comfortable seats, room for luggage (Mclaren claims that a two pairs of skis and boots or a golf bag can be carried in the cargo area) more interior room overall. It’s an evolution of what they did with the GT trim of the 570S, built from the ground-up as a GT car.
That’s not to say it won’t have the performance to match, however; it still gets a carbon fibre structure, a 1,530 kg curb weight, 611 hp/465 lb-ft from a turbo 4.0L V8 and claimed 0-100 km/h time of 3.2 seconds and a 200 mph top speed. The springs and dampers have been tuned, however, for a more GT-like experience which leads us to believe that this will likely be the smoothest-riding McLaren yet; it’s also the longest this side of Ultimate Series models such as the P1 or Senna. If performance is what you’re after, however, the “Sport” and “Track” drive modes are on-hand to whet your appetite.
The competition for this particular Mac has changed; instead of the likes of the Audi R8 or Ferrari 488, it’s the likes of the Aston Martin DB11 and Ferrari Portofino that this McLaren has in its sights. Pricing, meanwhile, is $210,000 US according to Autoblog, which again slots in-between the 720S and 570S Spider in McLaren’s line-up.
Style-wise, the clean door and fender panels – and large wheels – are on-hand to play into the minimalistic approach showcased in the upcoming Speedtail; it’s very different from the massive wings and intakes displayed by the Senna, for example. It once again brings to mind the likes of an Aston Martin or Bentley, vehicles that have their functional styling bits, but put smooth body panels and handsome proportions above all else. A simple look at the styling, and you can see right away what McLaren’s on about.
Other niceties include the most sophisticated infotainment systems ever seen in a McLaren – make no mistake; this is of high importance to luxury buyers – with a 12.3” display as well as a dimmable glass roof and 12-speaker Bowers and Wilkins audio.
