Having run a teaser campaign for some time, Maserati has officially unveiled its all-new Grecale. This compact SUV will be offered with a wide range of powertrains, from the conventional internal combustion engine, to a hybrid system, to all-electric.
At its global launch, 3 versions of the Grecale were introduced. The Grecale GT is powered by a 4-cylinder mild hybrid engine producing 300 hp. The Grecale Modena also has a 4-cylinder engine with mild hybrid system but pushes 330 hp. The current range-topper is the Grecale Trofeo which has a 3.0L V6 petrol engine with an output of 530 hp. This V6 unit is based on the more powerful 630 hp Nettuno engine found in the MC20. The all-electric Grecale Folgore with 400V technology is expected to be launched in a year’s time.
Also introduced at the launch was the Grecale PrimaSerie Launch Edition which is a limited edition featuring exclusive content.
The Grecale is marketed as “The Everyday Exceptional” SUV as Maserati had designed it to have a balance between versatility, elegance, performance and innovation, guaranteeing performance, comfort and safety, and including off-road capabilities.
Developed at the Maserati Innovation Lab in Modena, the Grecale is produced at the Cassino plant. This new SUV stands out in terms of spaciousness and comfort, boasting an impressive set of “best-in-class” features. It is best-in-class in terms of interior space, driveability, handling, acceleration (Trofeo: 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds), top speed (Trofeo: 285 km/h), sound quality and extensive use of fine materials such as wood, carbon fibre and leather.
The Grecale GT dimensions measure 4,846 mm (length), 1,670 mm (height) and 2,163 mm (width). It sits on a wheelbase of 2,901 mm and has a rear wheel track of 1,948 mm (which is even greater in the Trofeo).
The design of the Grecale embraces Maserati’s new visual symbol which distinguishes every new model since the MC20. The front features a low and imposing grille. The profile is notable for its contrast between purity and technique, with a highly fluid body featuring meandering, visual forms and its technical components highlighted by the use of carbon fibre.
At the rear, the boomerang taillights are inspired by the Giugiaro 3200 GT and fit in with the trapezoidal line, made even more striking by the coupé effect of the cabin and its finish like a sports car’s. In the cabin, the standout tech includes the traditional Maserati clockface. Digital for the first time, it transforms into a veritable in-car concierge, courtesy of voice control.
The user interface is touch-based allowing for extreme aesthetic cleanliness. Functions are controlled from the displays i.e. the 12.3” central screen (the largest ever seen in a Maserati), another 8.8” display for the extra controls and a 3rd screen for the passengers in the rear seats. In-car experience is managed from the Maserati Intelligent Assistant (MIA) Multimedia system, from the state-of-the-art infotainment and from Maserati Connect.
Furthermore, the in-car sound is pushed to the absolute limits of enjoyment by an all-round sound experience, ensured by the typical Maserati roar and the immersive Sonus Faber 3D sound system. The Sonus Faber system, which is standard at Premium level, includes 14 speakers; or 21 speakers on demand at High Premium level. The Maserati Innovation Lab engineers in Modena worked directly with Italian artiste, Dardust to design the in-car sound, including the customised “chimes” – the sound alerts received by the user as part of the extraordinary driving experience aboard Grecale.
Driving dynamics is handled by the new, 100% Maserati Vehicle Dynamic Control Module (VDCM) system and the 360° control it offers over the car. The option of complete control translates into a clear distinction between the various Drive modes i.e. COMFORT, GT, SPORT, CORSA (Trofeo only) and OFF-ROAD.
There is no indication yet when the Grecale will get to Malaysia.
