Japanese brand previews its first pure-electric performance car ahead of Tokyo Auto Salon debut
Subaru has issued a teaser image of its 2022 Subaru STI E-RA concept ahead of its reveal on January 14 at the Tokyo Auto Salon.
Said to signal the new electric era of Subaru’s performance brand, the concept is claimed to be a “study mode of motorsport vehicles for the carbon-neutral era”.
This suggests that instead of being a futuristic zero-emissions take on the incoming new-generation 2022 Subaru WRX STI, the concept will more likely be a race car created for the track or rallying.
The teaser image clearly reveals an illuminated ‘STI’ badge, slim C-shaped headlights, large twin bonnet ducts and a low wedged-shaped snout – all design elements that could influence other sporty Subaru models in the near future.
Sadly, no other details have been revealed, but it’s expected the STI E-RA will feature at least two electric motors to provide all-wheel drive.
As well as the new performance EV, Subaru has confirmed it will reveal new STI Performance variants of its latest WRX S4, Levorg wagon and BRZ coupe at the Tokyo show.
It’s thought that the STI Performance will add sportier styling, a lighter set of alloy rims and, potentially, a big brake package.
Aside from a freer-flowing exhaust, it’s thought actual under-bonnet performance upgrades are unlikely.
Stay tuned, as Subaru is expected to tease more of the STI E-RA racer in the build-up to the concept’s unveiling.
