The next Alfa Romeo Giulia might not be a sedan, or a wagon… and it’s not going to be an SUV.
Speaking with Autocar, Alfa Romeo boss Jean-Philipe Imparato said the next Giulia could sit on the “tipping point between the sedan and the station wagon”.
“With a new Giulia, maybe we can have the best of both worlds,” he told the British publication.
The design team has already pitched a swoopy rival to the Genesis G70 Shooting Brake, according to the Autocar report.
Although it’s looking into alternative body styles, Alfa Romeo doesn’t want to “give up” on the Giulia’s sedan roots entirely. In other words, it’ll remain a passenger car alongside its Stelvio SUV sibling.
The current Giulia debuted in 2015, and was updated in 2020. It still has life in it, according to Mr Imparato, who told Autocar both the Stelvio and Giulia have “some years left to run”.
In Australia, those cars will be joined by the Tonale SUV during 2023. Globally, the Tonale is just the start.
It’s unconfirmed at this stage, but Alfa Romeo is reportedly working on a large, electric SUV to take on the BMW iX and Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV. The brand will be electric-only by 2027.
It’s likely the new Alfa would use the STLA Large architecture, which Stellantis says will offer 400V or 800V technology and batteries measuring 101-118kWh.
Also set to be used by a raft of Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram models, the STLA Large mechanicals will offer up to 800km of range, and feature both single- and dual-motor electric powertrains with motors producing between 150 and 330kW of power.
Sports cars aside, Alfa Romeo hasn’t had an E-segment flagship since the 166 flagship left production in 2007.
Under Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) ownership, Alfa had planned an E-segment SUV but announced in an earnings call in 2019 development had been cancelled along with a reborn GTV coupe and a new 8C.
