A tuner company in Australia has managed to squeeze an incredible 740 hp out of the GR Yaris’ 1.6-liter three-cylinder turbo engine—almost three times what it made from the factory.
Powertune Australia published a photo of results from a dyno on Friday to Facebook that shows a maximum output of 740.9 hp. “This little 1.6-liter three-cylinder weapon is absolutely loving its new power, and it’s now time to have a crack at the drag strip to back up the numbers,” the caption reads.
CarBuzz got in contact with Powertune to find out what’s been done to extract so much horsepower from the tiny motor, which also powers the GR Corolla sold here in the United States. The answer is, unsurprisingly, a lot more boost. Under the hood you’ll find a new Garrett G30-770 58-millimeter turbocharger, along with a stronger head gasket, upgraded head studs, and a bigger intercooler. To keep up with the higher fuel demands, there are bigger injectors and a stronger fuel pump. Running everything is an ECU from MoTeC.

Amazingly, the engine’s internals—rods, crank, pistons, etc.—have been kept totally stock.
“We have pulled numerous engines down, and after doing a lot of comparisons and measurements, we believed we could make our target power with the stock items,” a company representative told CarBuzz.

The six-speed manual has been swapped out for an X-Shift sequential transmission in the name of straight-line speed. No quarter-mile times have been published, though we assume the car’s owner, Røde Microphones founder Peter Freedman, will waste no time taking it to the drag strip once he takes delivery.
