Kia recently gave the Niro a massive redesign for the SUV’s second generation, affecting the Niro’s hybrid, PHEV, and EV models. This is good timing, as the electric SUV segment is starting to bloom, and there are a lot of competitors to the Niro EV on the market right now. Here’s a look at five reasons to consider the 2023 Kia Niro EV over one of its rivals, the 2023 Volvo C40 Recharge.
1. Car shoppers can save a lot of money by choosing the new Kia Niro EV
Despite a redesign and a price hike, the Kia Niro EV is a much more affordable EV option than the C40 Recharge. According to Kia, the 2023 Niro EV starts at about $39,500, a roughly $500 increase from the price of the 2022 model year.
In comparison, the Volvo C40 Recharge starts at about $55,500, according to Edmunds. That’s a price difference of about $16,000. Car shoppers can upgrade their Niro EV to its top trim, which costs about $5,000 more than the base trim, and they’ll still be saving about $11,000 compared to buying the standard C40 Recharge model.
2. The 2023 Kia Niro EV is also more efficient

In addition to cost savings with the price tag, the Kia Niro EV is a more efficient car. It gets 113 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) combined, while the Volvo C40 Recharge gets 87 MPGe combined. That’s a difference of about 26 MPGe, and it could mean some savings when it’s time to recharge the car.
3. The Kia Niro EV gets more range than the Volvo C40 Recharge
The Kia also gets more range than the Volvo, despite the fact that the Niro EV has a smaller battery. It comes with a 64.8-kWh battery, which is much smaller than the 78-kWh battery that Volvo gave the C40 Recharge.

The Volvo C40 Recharge, meanwhile, has 24 cu. ft. of cargo capacity behind the second-row seats. With the second row folded down, it tops out at 49 cu. ft. of cargo capacity. This means that the C40 Recharge has slightly more cargo capacity behind the second-row seats, but the Niro EV has 14.7 cu. ft. more max cargo capacity.
5. Kia’s warranty is more generous than Volvo’s
All Kia models, including the Niro EV, come with a great warranty package. The Niro EV has a five-year or 60,000-mile basic warranty and a 10-year or 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Meanwhile, Volvo gave the C40 Recharge a four-year or 50,000-mile basic warranty and a four-year or 50,000-mile powertrain warranty.
Both warranty packages come with roadside assistance and are roughly tied in that regard. Kia offers a five-year or 60,000-mile roadside assistance plan, while Volvo offers a four-year and unlimited-mileage roadside assistance plan.
