- Eagle-eyed photogs caught the 2025 Chevrolet Equinox in testing
- It appears to have much boxier styling than today’s Equinox
- A hybrid powertrain is certainly possible
It seems that every major auto manufacturer has skin in the cutthroat segment of compact crossovers. With competition fierce from all angles (and countries), GM needs to bring their A-game if they wish to conquest a few customers – or at least keep the ones they have.
Enter the model’s next iteration, spotted roaming the streets of Michigan near GM’s Milford Proving Grounds with a brace of current model year examples in tow. Despite a full suit of eye-crossing camouflage, it doesn’t take a clairvoyant to predict the next Equinox is likely to have much boxier styling than today’s car. It would be a bridge too far to call it a head-on competitor with the Bronco Sport in terms of squared-off looks, but the camo’d Equinox appears to be leaning in that direction.
Witness the upright front end whose headlights seem to be housed in the bumper jowls with DRLs and turn signals perched atop. Whilst this is similar to the current model, the grille and headlamp area seem to be significantly more upright. There’s also a much more boxy-looking rear end too, with the area spanning the C- and D-pillars having an vertical aesthetic compared to the present swept back visage.
Ignore those round red taillamps and off-the-shelf white LED backup lamps. They’re simply placeholders until all hands sign off on the final design. Expect them to be horizontal and stretching into the rear hatch like the existing lights but, if the rest of the car is any indication, they will be shaped with a t-square. Towing gear pokes out through the rear valence.
Whatever its final form, we do sincerely hope Chevrolet infuses a bit of grunt under the hood compared to today’s car. Available solely with a sad-sack 1.5L turbo mill which wheezes through yer commute like an asthmatic breathing through a straw, the powertrain was enough for multiple Driving contributors to name it (or its GMC cousin) as one of the most disappointing vehicles they’ve driven this year.
GM has some excellent small-displacement engines in their corporate cupboard; adding one to the Equinox option sheet would be a good call. Tailpipes on this test mule tell us the Equinox will continue to offer internal combustion, with the smart play including at least one hybrid option.
Expect the new 2025 Chevrolet Equinox to go on sale in 2024.
