The 2024 Polestar 4 has been revealed ahead of a 2024 Australian debut with two drivetrains, up to 600km of WLTP range and a daring design – including no rear windscreen. Smaller than the Polestar 3 revealed last year, the Polestar 4 is aimed at the Mercedes-Benz EQC, Tesla Model Y and upcoming electric Porsche Macan. The 4 will go on sale locally in 2024, though specific timing and pricing is yet to be confirmed – the 4 will start from €60,000 in Europe (currently around AUD$98,000).
“With Polestar 4 we have taken a fundamental new approach to SUV coupé design. Rather than simply modifying an existing SUV, giving it a faster roofline and as a result, compromising elements like rear headroom and comfort, we have designed Polestar 4 from the ground up as a new breed of SUV coupé that celebrates rear occupant experience,” says Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO.
Revealed today at the Shanghai Motor Show, the 2024 Polestar 4 uses parent company Geely’s ‘Sustainable Experience Architecture’ platform, which is the first time that a Polestar has used a platform not (yet) shared with Volvo. It measures 4,839mm long, 2,139mm wide, 1,544mm tall and rides on a 2,999mm long wheelbase. There will be two variants: the Long Range Single Motor and the Long Range Dual Motor, and both use the same 102kWh battery giving up to 600km of range.
The Single Motor variant of the 2024 Polestar 4 uses a 200kW/343Nm electric motor driving the rear wheels, and is capable of a 7.4-second 0-100km/h sprint time and up to 600km of range (WLTP). The Polestar 4 Dual Motor adds a second motor on the front wheels for a total of 400kW and 686Nm – good enough for a 3.8-second 0-100km/h sprint, which reportedly makes it the quickest Polestar ever, a top speed of 200km/h and a WLTP range of 560km.
Both 2024 Polestar 4 models can be charged at up to 200kW on a DC charger, or 22kW on an AC charger, with a 5-80 per cent charge capable in as little as 32 minutes. Boosting its efficiency is a standard heat pump, as well as a drivetrain that can decouple the front motor. Under the body is “semi-active” suspension, while wheels ranging from 20-inches to 22-inches in size will be available – the 22s come with the optional Performance Pack that also adds gold detailing, Brembo four-piston front brake callipers, enlarged front and rear brake discs and firmer suspension.
The 2024 Polestar 4, like the Polestar 3, is very design-lead and looks quite sharp. As expected, it’s a coupe-styled SUV with several interesting design elements, including T-shaped headlights, retractable door handles, frameless doors and a singular LED light bar that’s switched on all the time. Most interesting, however, is that there’s no rear window for the Polestar 4 – instead, there’s a roof-mounted camera that displays its image on the central rear camera. While that’s an increasingly common feature in the car market, the lack of a rear window is believed to be a first in the industry.
The interior of the 2024 Polestar 4 follows the interior of the recent Polestar models with a luxurious, high-quality and minimalist look. The driver uses a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, while the central touchscreen is a huge 15.4-inch unit that uses the same Android Automotive software as other Polestar models. The system includes an inbuilt SIM card for Google Maps, the Google Play Store, Google Assistant, over-the-air updates and for iOS users, Apple CarPlay. There’s also a 14.7-inch heads-up display that has a snow mode to change the text to a yellow colour for easier snow driving.
The 2024 Polestar 4 will offer an optional 1,400-watt 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, which increases to 16 speakers if the optional Nappa Package is chosen as two speakers are added into each front seat headrest. Each Polestar 4 has 12 cameras fitted, alongside one radar and 12 ultrasonic sensors for the car’s various safety systems, as well as nine airbags. Buyers will need to spend extra to option the Pilot Pack, however, to earn features like semi-autonomous driving.
Other available equipment includes a full-length panoramic glass roof – with optional electrochromic functionality, allowing for opaque covering on hot days, interior upholstery made from a tailored knit textile which consists of 100% recycled PET and either Pirelli or Michelin tyres.
